for socially needy students


R E G U L A T I O N S
of the Competition


I. Successful candidates should meet the following criteria:
  1. Be first year students at a Bulgarian university for the academic year 2007-2008;
  2. Come from families with proven financial needs;
  3. Demonstrate academic achievements of minimum 4.50 at 6.00-ball system from the secondary school;
  4. Demonstrate a score of minimum 4.50 at the university admission exams;

II. Application documents:
  1. Declaration (in Bulgarian) (download here [MS Word - 53 KB]);
  2. A copy of the certificate for secondary education;
  3. Document showing the acceptance at a Bulgarian university as a first year student, stating the score achieved at the admission exams;
  4. Document stating the income of the candidate and his family.
    (Issued free of charge by the National Revenue Agency. The document should state:
    • Assets of the family (property(;
    • Vehicles;
    • Companies owned / shares;
    • Income declared in 2006.)

III. Deadlines:    Applications submitted between 23 and 29 October 2007.

       Place:    The Foundation, Sofia, 3 V.Aprilov Street or over the mail (stamp valid)

An Expert Committee by representatives of the Foundation, the American Foundation for Bulgaria, the Gipsons family, and representatives of academic circles reviews the documents, checks their validity, ranks the candidates by academic achievements and social needs and selects the 25 scholarship holders.

For the academic year 2007-2008 the scholarship amounts to 1,000 BGN a year (100 BGN per month for the 10 months of study -- October 1, 2007 to July 31, 2008). The scholarship is paid in two parts 500 BGN each at the begining of the respective semister.

At the end of each semester the grantees submit a document showing their academic achievements, GPA should be not lower than Very Good 4.50 (at a 6.00 scale), which is a precondition for the scholarship to be paid.

The scholarships are intended to continue untill the candidate completes his Bachelor studies, provided there are funds available and in case the grantee meets the requirements of these Regulations.
